Greatness Tip!

Chances are that if you read my newsletters, have attended seminars on personal growth or are familiar with authors such as Stephen Covey, Deepak Chopra or Robin Sharma, you are at least a tiny bit curious about WHO YOU ARE! The funny thing is - many of us live our lives from the sidelines and are either unaware or too afraid to experience ourselves! Every soul requires soulful time - time to be with ourselves.

Have you ever met someone and thought, "Wow- she's nice! I'd like to get to know her!" and then made arrangements to meet for coffee or lunch? To get to know someone better requires investing some time into the relationship AND so does getting to know yourself better! In Julia Cameron's book The Artist's Way, Cameron suggests that we schedule 2 hours a week (an Artist's Date) to do something that allows us to just "be". That means - no chores, no productivity, no errands, no "shoulds". It could be going for a long walk, browsing through a museum, reading, scrapbooking - anything exploratory and fun. The trick is - you need to do it by yourself. My challenge to you this week is to schedule your own Artist's Date and get to know yourself. Let me know how it goes!

The Summer Switch

Whether it is the gorgeous weather, the anticipation of well-deserved holidays or the curious wondering (dread!) of what to do when the kids are home for 2 months - summer is often a time when our lives change. Schedules change, outlooks change, the pace changes. I am speaking this month at the Oakville Parent-Child Centre on "The Summer Switch". It will be about creating realistic expectations and being clear on what we want this summer. Personal Reflection: What Have I Learned?

I don't think I have ever been more proud! This weekend, my 9 year old daughter Kaitlin competed in an Ontario-wide gymnastics competition in East York. She has been in gymnastics since she was 2 years old and has been training competitively for 3 years now. I am constantly amazed by her natural talent for this sport. This weekend, she brought home 3 golds and a silver and even received a special achievement award for her vault performance! You see - my husband Dave and I grew up in organized sports and activities and enjoy competition and we love that Kaitlin is following in our footsteps. But is she? A few weeks ago, Kaitlin hinted to us that she doesn't think she will continue with gymnastics and she wants to stop. My first reaction was "What@^$*%*&? All that wasted talent and time!" The truth is that I think she has stayed in gymnastics to please us. Yikes! So what have I learned? I have learned that teaching my daughter that she needs to trust her feelings is more important than my pride. I'm not sure whether she will stay or go but either way, I will honour it. Cross your fingers for me! Either way, I'll need it!
