I am learning a great deal in my 40 day yoga program.  Last week, I very clearly experienced the Art of Staying.   My yoga coach said that when you are in a pose in yoga and you really start to feel the discomfort, THAT is when the pose begins.  That was a revelation to me as it SO applies in my life and in my yoga and meditation practice.

For any of you who have a natural response of fight or flight when thing get tough, the art of staying will be good practice for you.  Next time you are in a situation where things start to feel uncomfortable, be aware of what you want to do.  Do you want to argue your point (fight) or just get out of the situation (flight)?  Instead, stick to it, relax your body and your mind and just STAY.  Whether it's in a disagreement with a friend/spouse/colleague/child or whether you are in a traffic jam or a long line up, choose to be aware and then choose to stay.  You will come to great realizations on the other end of STAYING that you would not, had you not stayed.  Let me know how it goes.

Marina died last week.  She was full of energy, was absolutely gorgeous and she lived in a good life.  Marina was our 3.5 year old beta fish. What a tragic event it turned out to be.  She had jumped out of her tank, unbeknownst to us.  What was interesting about this event was my family's very different reactions to it.  I reacted very matter-of-factly, wondering how we should dispose of the poor thing.  My husband started to make dead fish jokes and realized that they were not going over too well when both our children started to cry.  My oldest daughter Kaitlin was sad (it was her fish and she took very good care of it) yet she said "mom, I didn't really have a deep connection with her!" – such a life coach-like comment.  Promising I would replace her fish seemed to cheer her up quickly and she very soon resumed back into her every day activities.  My little one, Megan, was, however, distraught.  She cried and sobbed and cried some more and all I could do to console her was to hug her and listen to her.  What did I learn through our first family fatality?  That everyone reacts differently to the same event so we need to appreciate each others' spaces and support each other from a place of compassion and understanding.  Poor Marina – may she rest in peace.
