Greatness Tip!

“What will people say?” “That won’t look good!”  “I want to but I really shouldn’t!”

Do these phrases sound familiar? At one point or another, we have all had these conversations with ourselves, debating on what to do or how to think about a particular subject.  This is called an essential-self/social-self conversation.  In Martha Beck’s book Finding your own North Star, she explains how who really are and what we truly value (our essential selves) often get masked by social pressures and demands (our social selves).

Like layers of an onion, we need to peel away our social layers and really explore what we REALLY want.  So anytime you find yourself saying “I should” or “I’d better” or “I have to” – that’s your social-self talking.  Your essential self starts its sentences off with “I want” or “I need” or “I love”.  Which “self” are you listening to and honouring?

Values Discovery Journey

The best way to dig right into the core of “who” you are, ignoring all the social musts in your life, is to discover your unique core values.  Guided by our values and living our lives according to them leads us to personal fulfillment, more joy and peace and less stress.  Take a Values Discovery Journey with me and explore what values really drive you, uncover the difference between your life’s “shoulds” vs. “wants” and make steps to live a more authentic life.  Your Values Discovery Journey consists of three 45 minute sessions (in person or telephone), scheduled at your convenience.  Cost: $125 plus GST per session or $375 plus GST total.  Contact yattard@cogeco.ca for more information or to register.

Personal Reflection: What Have I Learned?

My cousin Byron recently emailed me some gorgeous pictures of Granville Island Market in Vancouver, captured when he was there visiting.  That is My Favourite Place in the World.  You see – I lived in Vancouver for 10 years and was fortunate enough to live only 15 minutes (by foot!) away from this bustling marketplace, filled with freshness, activity and over time, familiarity.

Six years ago, my husband and I decided to move our young family to Ontario because we wanted our children to know both sides of our family, who all happen to live in and around the Greater Toronto area.  It was a tough decision with major changes – one of which was moving away from My Favourite Place in the World.  Despite our regular longings of going back to Vancouver, we have never regretted the move.  This past weekend, we spent Saturday with my in-laws and Sunday with my parents and brother.  It was the perfect weekend!  So what have I learned?  I learned that Family Trumps Everything and it appears, being with those I love is actually My Favourite Place in the World.
