Greatness Tip!

Here’s a simple mathematical formula that actually works in real life.

STIMULUS +RESPONSE = OUTCOME

Life is often uncontrollable.  We can get downsized, we can be dumped by those we thought were “the one”, we can survive our loved ones, we get interrupted and our plans get changed by bosses, spouses and often, children!  We cannot always control these “STIMULI” that happen in our lives.  They are changes that happen TO us, not ones that we initiate.  However, (look at the formula), we always have choice in our RESPONSES.  Our RESPONSE dictates the OUTCOME.  Say, for example, your newly-purchased car was anonymously bumped while you had it parked in a strip mall, leaving a dent and scratches on the bumper. It’s understandable that this is not a happy situation however you can choose to respond in a variety of ways.  On one end, you could choose to RESPOND by spending hours brooding over who the #^%*&$ was responsible and once you find them, boy, are they ever going to PAY….this would result in the OUTCOME of anger, blame, revenge….outcomes that have no point or use.  OR, on the other end of the spectrum, you could choose to RESPOND by finding out how you can repair the damage quickly and inexpensively, resulting in an OUTCOME of a quick solution.  The point is that YOU get to choose.  So choose the response that gives you the best outcome, which is typically not the one you are used to doing.  Try it and let me know how it goes!

Personal Reflection: What Have I Learned?

My basement has been a huge and constant drain for me.  It is unfinished and, over the past 6 years of living in this house, has been a dumping ground for my family!  Tools, toys, luggage, old files, unused furniture, old paint cans, colouring books, markers, stickers, sports equipment for all seasons….you get the picture.  It got so bad at one point that I would just stand at the top of the stairs and throw toys “down there” for fear that I would never surface if I actually braved the walk down the stairs.  This was so overwhelming for me that I couldn’t even apply my own advice of “just do the first 15 minutes of a daunting task.”  And then Lisa showed up – thank goodness!  Lisa Cote-McKain is a Professional Organizer and runs Well Done!  She is the newest coach working with Yvonne Attard Consulting and Coaching.  (More about Lisa in the next issue so stay tuned!)  Lisa helped me establish the priorities of my basement and tackle the daunting task of reorganizing it. After 6 hours, I am proud to say that I now have a functional and safe basement that I dare to enter on a daily basis.  What a difference it makes – the space is great, and so is the clarity it gives to my mind.  Clutterfree bring clarity!  So what have I learned?  That although I thought I could have done this alone, having an organizational coach (or any coach really!) HELPS keep me focused and motivated.
